Buying XRP means buying the XRP Ledger’s asset
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a network designed for transferring value. It is different from shares in Ripple, the company associated with the ecosystem. In Flow’s asset selector, look for the XRP ticker; the asset may be labelled Ripple.

An XRP address and a destination tag do different jobs
A classic XRP Ledger address starts with r. Some receiving services use a shared address and a separate destination tag to identify the customer. The address identifies the ledger account; the tag identifies the recipient within that service.
Use the exact details on the receiving wallet’s deposit screen. If a tag is required, include it in the order’s destination-tag field. Do not guess a tag or omit one because the address looks correct. If the receiving format is unclear, contact support before paying.
Check the receiving account’s requirements
XRP Ledger accounts have reserve requirements. A wallet may distinguish its total XRP balance from the amount available to spend. Check the wallet’s current account guidance, especially when funding a new account for the first time.
An exchange receiving account can also have its own deposit minimum and crediting checks. Use a receiving account you control, compare its XRP Ledger instructions with the Flow order, and retain the order reference if you need help following delivery.

Check the tag before buying XRP
An illustrative walkthrough. Your order displays the current amount, quote and available networks.
- Open the XRP receive screen. Note the XRP Ledger address and whether that specific account requires a destination tag.
- Choose XRP in Flow and enter your NZD amount. Copy the address and, when required, the tag into their separate fields. Compare both values with the receiving instructions before confirming.
- Pay using your order’s bank details and reference. Follow the order activity, then check the receiving account. If a transfer appears on the ledger but a service has not credited it, keep the transaction reference and ask for help before sending anything again.
Questions about buying XRP
Does every XRP wallet need a destination tag?
No. Tags are commonly used by services that share a ledger address between customers. Follow the instructions for your exact receiving account; a tag required by that account must be included.
Is buying XRP the same as investing in Ripple shares?
No. XRP is a cryptoasset on the XRP Ledger. Buying it does not give you shares in Ripple or ownership of the company.
